WPSurfer is a WordPress plugin allowing you to export your content directly from Content Editor to a WordPress post – either to an existing one or a new draft.

How to install the plugin?

The first step is downloading the ZIP archive file with a plugin from your client panel. Do not unzip it!

Now you have two ways to install the WPSurfer:

via wp-admin

  1. Go to your WordPress admin page → Plugins.

  2. Click "Add New" at the top of the page.

  3. Click "Upload Plugin" at the top of the page.

  4. Click "Choose File" and find the downloaded ZIP archive on your computer using the popup window.

  5. Click "Install Now".

  6. After installation is completed, click "Activate".

via FTP

  1. Unzip the archive you downloaded.

  2. Connect to your server via FTP (you should have instructions and credentials for this on your hosting provider page).

  3. Find location: wp-content / plguins / (in most cases it is located in directory public_html, htdocs or www).

  4. Copy the whole plugin directory you unzipped in step [1] into the plugins folder. (As a result, you should have "wp-content / plugins / surferseo directory").

  5. Go to wp-admin → Plugins.

  6. Find WPSurfer on the list of the plugins and click "Activate".

How to connect the WPSurfer to Surfer?

To connect the WPSurfer to Surfer:

  1. Go to your WordPress admin page.

  2. Choose the "WPSurfer" from the menu on the left.

  3. Click "Login in with Surfer".

  4. You will be redirected to a Surfer page (in a new tab), where you need to log in using your Surfer credentials.

  5. After that, you should see a correct connection message on your WordPress page.

How to export the content from a content editor to WordPress?

To export the post from a content editor to WordPress:

  1. Click the "Export" button with the WordPress icon in the top right corner of the Content Editor.

  2. Choose the domain to which you want to export data if you have more than one available.

  3. Choose if you want to create a new post or update an existing one.

  4. Check if all data is correct.

  5. Click the "Create a new Post" or "Update selected Post" button, depending on which option you chose, and your content will be visible in WordPress.

  • When you create a new post, in WordPress it will be visible as a draft, so you need to go to your WordPress to publish it.

  • When you update an existing post, doesn't matter if it's a draft or published in WordPress, the status stays the same, so when the post is published, we update it and the changes will be visible as published straight away.

How to disconnect the WPSurfer plugin?

You can close the connection in Surfer or in WordPress.

via Surfer

  1. Go to the list of WordPress connections.

  2. Find the domain that you want to disconnect.

  3. Click "Disconnect" next to the domain name.

via WPSurfer

  1. Go to your WordPress admin.

  2. Choose Surfer from the menu on the left.

  3. Click "Disconnect".


Which WordPress version does the WPSurfer support? The plugin supports two basic WordPress editors: Gutenberg and Classic Editor.

Can I connect multiple WordPress pages to Surfer? Yes, you can. Each time you add a new WP page, follow the steps in this instruction.

Can I connect a WordPress page to multiple Surfer accounts? No, you can only connect a particular WordPress page to one Surfer account.

Is WPSurfer free? The plugin is free to download, but you can use it as long as you have an active Surfer subscription.

WPSurfer vs Content Editor Chrome extension At the moment you can use both tools – with WPSurfer you create content in Content Editor and then you export it to WordPress, and when it comes to the Chrome extension, it will show you the Content Editor guidelines directly in WordPress, so you can work on your post there. In the future, we plan to unify these two tools.


I'm using Wordfence, and WPSurfer is not working.
What helps is to change the settings when it comes to application passwords in Wordfence:

1. Go to wp-admin » WordFence » All Options.
2. Look for a "Brute Force Protection" section.

3. Find a "Disable WordPress application passwords" option, unmark it and save the settings.
