A comprehensive guide to the old Keyword Research tool in Surfer.

Note: For keyword research purposes, we recommend using our newer version of the tool as it serves the same purpose with additional benefits. We're likely to provide more accurate results because we also partly crawl the SERPs to get keyword ideas.

If you prefer the old Keyword Research, this guide is for you.

Our old Keyword Research is still available for anyone with an active Surfer plan. The only difference is that you cannot access it from the left-side toolbar anymore.

You will now be only able to access it from the new Keyword Research dashboard or through the direct link.

The user interface, which is intuitive and inspired by the old Google Keyword Planner, helps a lot with building your keyword lists.

Similar Keywords

Similar Keywords are the search terms obtained through reverse engineering of Google Search Results. Thousands of SERPs are analyzed to acquire one set of Similar Keywords.

A keyword is considered similar if it has overlapping search results. We analyze all the keywords to determine which ones have the same URLs in SERPs.

Now Surfer will show you Similar Keywords related to your analyzed search term in seconds. It is not a semantic match; we asked Google Algorithm indirectly to tell us which keywords can be ranked together.

Check the level of similarity to find the most related search terms. High similarity means that you can rank them on the same page - competitors did that, so why you can't do the same?

But that's not the end of the Similar Keywords story. Remember the old Google Keyword Planner? It allowed us to build a list of keywords and analyze them with the whole set of data. I liked that because it was a quick and easy way to broaden the horizon and explore the niche.

We recreated this function in Surfer's old Keyword Research tool too.

Add interesting keywords to the clipboard and analyze using more than one keyword. Keep adding keywords and analyzing. The list will grow and provide you with a fantastic set of search terms.

Tip: add keywords that seem to be great ideas for supportive articles or subheadings; it allows you to explore the most efficiently.

Where to find Similar Keywords?

  • Keyword Surfer

We use Similar Keywords logic in Keyword Surfer Extension; it is free. Try it and decide if you like the approach.

This little tool goes along with Similar Keywords. It allows you to find questions and presents the data in the Similar Keywords tab.

These are real questions that people ask Google with actual search volume. It is an excellent idea for the FAQ section on your site as it will drive organic traffic and add topical relevance to your page. You can rank for all similar questions on the same page.

Use the same method to grow the list as for Similar Keywords. Once you analyze a set of keywords, you will end up with 99 questions to answer at some point.

Having same terms

It is a well-known approach to semantic research. Add a keyword in the input, and Surfer will check if any other keywords contain it.

It is a great way to research broad topics, like VPN, SEO, or diet. The keywords list is sorted by the search volume and is easy to export.

Tip: use keyword fragments to find other keywords in this group, such as "gift for ..." or "best survival ..."

Keywords tab in SERP Analyzer - Common Ranked Keywords

Direct competitors are a great source of inspiration for keywords. Run a SERP Analyzer to get information about real-time data about SERP and keywords that are commonly ranked by these pages.

The data is available in the Keywords tab below the chart.

The table has four columns:

  • top 10 similar keywords - a bit more data handy, check Similar Keywords to the keyword (because why not? ;) ),

  • overlapping pages - number of competitors ranking for a keyword,

  • search volume,

  • relevance - metric based on traffic and search volume, sorts keywords by the practical value they bring.

The table contains keywords that are the most commonly ranked by the top 20 competitors.

You can adjust competitors.

Compare the list with your Search Console Export, and you have it - quick and easy gap analysis. (Sounds like a feature request, isn't it?)

I hope that this article revealed the power of Surfer's old Keyword Research tool. You can find more research features in the new version.
