AI Tracker is Surfer’s unique tool designed to help you track mentions of your content and brand in responses generated by large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and others. It gives you a peek into what sources LLMs use to answer prompts and whether your website is among them.

What is AI Tracker?

AI Tracker is an additional Surfer feature that helps you monitor your brand in responses from popular LLMs. It evaluates a set of prompts and identifies which domains are being cited or referenced when those prompts are answered.

You’ll see:

  • Which of your pages are mentioned

  • Which competitors are getting cited

  • How frequently each domain appears

  • Insights on prompt-level performance

It’s a powerful way to understand if you're influencing AI-generated answers—and how to improve that influence over time.


Key Metrics You’ll See

  • Mentions – how often your domain appears in LLM responses

  • Position – your order in the list of cited sources

  • Prompt visibility – which prompts your brand is showing up for

  • Top domains – domains most frequently cited by the LLMs

  • Category of source – shows if LLMs prefer forums, social media, news, or educational domains

Once you create an AI Tracker query, your data will be refreshed weekly and the chart will be updated every week:

1. Analyze Top Domains and Their Categories

See which sites LLMs trust the most. If platforms like LinkedIn, Reddit, or Quora appear frequently, consider:

  • Becoming active there

  • Contributing insightful posts and answers

  • Partnering with influencers or asking employees to share your content

If certain domains dominate the citations, explore guest posting, partnerships, or even sponsored mentions - this will help you build your domain's authority and strong external linking network.


2. Recreate or Improve What Works

Study the top-cited content. What makes it valuable?

  • Use Content Editor to recreate or outperform similar pages

  • Pay attention to factual depth using the Facts tab

  • Match or exceed the coverage of top-performing content


3. Use Keyword & Topical Research

Surfer’s Keyword Research and Topic Explorer tools (especially when connected with GSC) help you:

  • Discover related content ideas

  • Fill content gaps LLMs might be using to source answers

  • Improve topical authority across a cluster


4. Keep Track of Your Brand

  • Track branded keywords in your Site dashboards

  • Low branded search volume? Time to boost brand-building activities

  • Secure brand mentions on other websites related to your niche—these are the sources LLMs often train on


5. Monitor Competitors

  • Identify the top-mentioned competitors

  • Study their SEO and content strategies

  • See what kind of brand presence and citations they are getting

Currently, Surfer doesn’t extract brand mentions directly from sources. But by reviewing open-source content shown in AI Tracker, you can get valuable clues.

  • Evaluate if your activities are improving visibility

  • Adjust content and targeting strategies based on your AI Tracker data

Is AI Tracker included in my plan?

Currently, AI Tracker is not included in any Surfer plan by default, but it is available as an add-on. You can purchase it directly in-app 👉 here.

Are there any discounts for bigger packages?

Each package includes 25 prompts. The more packages you purchase, the lower the unit price becomes:

You can also buy pre-set bundles at a discounted total price:

How does the prompt limit work?

Each AI Tracker query can include up to 5 prompts at once. You can exclude prompts if you don’t need to track that many for a specific brand, product, or keyword. This gives you the flexibility to focus only on the most relevant prompts for your goals.

I’ve purchased a package but need more prompts—how can I increase the limit?
