🛠️ What you’ll need?
The Rank Tracker add-on (starts at $17 for 200 keywords)
A list of keywords you want to track
The domain or URLs you want to monitor
📆 When to do it and how often?
Setup: When starting a new SEO campaign or testing a content update
Check-in: Weekly (or more often, if you’re making fast changes)
Adjust: Anytime you spot a drop, ranking shift, or new opportunity
Prepare
Add the Rank Tracker add-on to your Surfer account (Buy here)
Decide what to track: keywords, locations, devices, and pages
Plan how to split your 200 keywords
💡 Example setups:
1 project: 200 keywords for Desktop (US)
2 projects: 100 Desktop + 100 Mobile
5 regional projects: 40 keywords each
Projects share the same quota, so mix and match however you like.
Step-by-step: Set up your tracking
Go to Keyword Tracker
→ Log in to Surfer → Open Keyword Tracker in the menu
Create a new project
→ Click + New Rank Tracker Project
Name your project
Use a clear, descriptive format: Main Site – US – Desktop or Blog Pages – UK – Mobile
Add your keywords
One per line. Use your full quota for maximum insight.
💡 Not sure where to start? Track keywords from Content Audit pages to double up on insights and validate weekly content suggestions.
5. Choose tracking type
Exact match URL → Track keyword performance for a specific page (e.g. /product-page).
Broad domain → Track keyword performance sitewide (e.g. entire site: domain.com; good for a general view of how your entire website is ranking for keywords of your choice).
6. Set location & device
Specify the country (e.g. United States for English keywords, United States - ES for Spanish keywords).
Choose to track Desktop, Mobile, or both (you can create separate projects if you want to track the same keywords for multiple devices).
7. Start tracking
Once set up, Surfer will start collecting your ranking data. It may take a moment to populate the first report.
8. Edit later
You can add or remove keywords anytime; you can also stack keyword slots (eg. buy 200 + 200 keywords for $34). Projects are flexible.
Monitor daily rankings
Every day, your data refreshes. Here’s what you’ll see:
Rank → Current SERP position
SERP features → Whether your keyword triggers snippets, AI overviews, etc.
Ranking URL → The exact URL ranking for that keyword (the specific page ranking if using exact match; if broad domain, whichever page is first in the SERPs)
Dive deeper (if you want)
Click any keyword → view ranking history
Use SERP History to view daily snapshots of top 100 results
Explore Historical Charts to track trends over time
Keep refining
Add new keywords as your strategy evolves
Remove old or low-priority terms
Create separate projects to monitor new regions, devices, or campaigns
Use your data to catch drops early and take action—whether that means refreshing content, adding internal links, or making technical fixes
🎉 That’s it! You’re now tracking like a pro—with daily, reliable, actionable SEO data at your fingertips.
