Sites Migration & Connection Guide

Learn how to transition your Content Audit projects and Topical Maps into Sites

Updated over a week ago

We’re currently gradually rolling out the new Sites experience to some of our users. If you don't have access to Sites yet, you can request it from the Surfer Support team via live chat or [email protected].

The project transition is slightly different depending on your previous usage of Surfer tools.

Domains with both Content Audit and Topical Maps projects

If you've previously used both tools for the same domain:

  • Your domain will appear as ready to set up

  • Your Content Audit project will be selected by default

  • You're only one quick step away from creating the project - you will be given a choice to create a new Topical Map or use an existing one:

    • Creating a new Topical Map - you will need to wait a few minutes before the Topical Map is ready

    • Selecting an existing Topical Map - your entire project will be prepared right away

  • Make your choice and click Finish - we will take care of the rest!

Domains with only Content Audit projects

If you only had a Content Audit project for your domain in the past:

  • Your domains with Content Audit will appear as “ready to set up.”

  • When you click Set up, we’ll:

    • Automatically create a Topical Map for the domain in the background.

    • Use the exact location as your existing CA project.

  • Once setup is complete, your project will be fully functional on the Sites, and no manual steps or choices will be needed.

Domains with only Topical Map projects

If you only had Topical Map projects for your domain in the past, when you open Sites:

  • Your domains with existing Topical Maps will appear with a prompt to complete the setup, and you’ll be asked to:

    • Select a location for the new Content Audit project

    • Choose which pages to audit — either:

      • Top 100 pages

      • Manual selection

      • ... or decide later

    • Decide if you want to use the existing Topical Map or create a new one if the current one is outdated.

  • After this quick setup, your Site project will be ready!

New domains (no previous Topical Map or Content Audit projects)

If your domain was not connected to either of the tools in the past, when you visit Sites:

  • You’ll see an empty state with a short video introducing Sites and its benefits.

  • You’ll be asked to connect your Google Search Console (if it's not yet connected)

  • Once the GSC is connected, you can begin by creating your first Site project and selecting a domain.

  • You’ll receive a welcome email with tips on what you can do next!

🔄 Other Important Notes

  • Reconnect GSC: You'll see a reconnect prompt if your Google Search Console access is lost or revoked. Click it, and all associated domains will be reconnected at once.

  • Multiple Search Consoles: You can connect as many Google Search Consoles as you want!

  • Project Limits: There is no limit on how many Sites projects you can create, but there is a limitation on how many pages within your domain we can analyse in Content Audit, depending on your plan.
